Fifteen brilliant but needy students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, have received scholarships from the S.T. Nankani and Hagan Bursary to support their education.
Each beneficiary received GH¢1,500, bringing the total amount disbursed to GH¢22,500. The scholarships are intended to ease the financial burden on the students by supporting the payment of their academic fees.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Director of Student Affairs, Professor Marian Asantewah Nkansah, expressed appreciation to the Board of Trustees for the scheme's sustained contribution to student welfare.
She said recent changes to the academic calendar could leave students with limited time to raise money before their fees became due, making the support particularly timely.
The bursary, she said, would enable beneficiaries to make part-payment of their fees.
Professor Fred Akuffo, a member of the Board of Trustees of the bursary, said the scholarship scheme was established in 2003 in honour of S.T. Nankani, who died in 2001.
The initiative began with five beneficiaries in its first year and has expanded over the years. By 2024, more than 130 students had benefited from the scheme.
Akuffo said the bursary sought to support students' education while promoting gender and regional diversity at KNUST.
The scholarship is open to second-year students in the Colleges of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Health Sciences, Science and Engineering.
Senior Assistant Registrar at DoSA, Mrs Theodora Oduro, urged the beneficiaries to honour the opportunity by maintaining high academic standards.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Ms Felicity Akoma Nyamekye expressed appreciation to the Board of Trustees and KNUST for the financial support.
She pledged the beneficiaries' commitment to their studies and to making the most of the opportunity.
